Tom Schnitzer

Dr. Schnitzer is Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Internal Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He has held positions of Assistant Dean for Clinical Research and Director of the Office of Clinical Research at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine from 1997-2007 and Director of the Section of Rheumatology and the Section of Geriatric Medicine at Rush University Medical School from 1985-1997. His research focuses on mechanisms of chronic pain and the development of therapeutics for this condition as well as the treatment and prevention of bone loss in people with disabilities.

Dr. Schnitzer graduated from Princeton University, New Jersey, with a degree in biochemistry. He received his medical degree from Harvard University Medical School, in Boston, Massachusetts, and completed his internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. After serving as a research associate at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, he became a fellow at the Medical Research Council Rheumatism Unit in Taplow, England.

Dr. Schnitzer is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Rheumatology, the American Geriatrics Society, the American Society of Microbiology, and the Osteoarthritis Research Society. He serves as editor-in-chief of Current Osteoporosis Reports and is on the editorial boards of Arthritis Care and Research, Therapy, and Open Rheumatology Journal. He has contributed chapters for a number of textbooks and published more than 130 papers, most recently in Arthritis and Rheumatism, the Journal of Rheumatology, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
